Life Events
St. Luke’s is honored to be a part of your life during some of your most important moments. Below you will find information about baptisms, weddings, and funerals at St. Luke’s. When you are ready to finalize any of these plans, please call our office at (210) 828-6425.
Baptism is the full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body the Church and the bond God establishes in Baptism is indissoluble. All who have been baptized by water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, regardless of denomination, are able to fully participate in the life of the parish.
If you have not been baptized, come and talk with one of us! We would love to talk about the next steps in your walk with God, and in the life of the parish. Baptism is available for all ages and is a wonderful occurrence in the worship of the parish. Baptism takes place during one of our Eucharist services on Sundays, as the congregation promises to support you in your continuing faith journey.
Baptism is especially appropriate as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer on these specific feast dates: The Baptism of our Lord, The Great Vigil of Easter, Pentecost, and All Saints Sunday. We do offer other Sundays throughout the year at the discretion of the Rector.
If you would like to inquire about Baptism for you or your child, please submit this completed form for our Ministry Support Associate, Sara Spreen, to contact you. [baptism info form link]
Marriage is a reflection and incarnation of God’s will for human persons in committed relationships, and Christian marriages are both pronounced and lived out in the presence of a community of faith. Choosing to be married at St. Luke’s acknowledges that you believe the marriage ceremony to be primarily a sacrament of the church and a worship service. The joining of two people in the sacramental rite of marriage is such a blessing and we are happy for your journey!
Some things to consider:
To be married in the Episcopal Church at least one of the persons getting married must be a baptized Christian. All couples must participate in canonically required pre-marital counseling sessions for a marriage in the Episcopal Church. This is done either with a member of the St. Luke’s Clergy or a qualified counselor or therapist that has been approved by the Officiating Priest.
It is preferred to contact the church at least six months in advance or as early as one year before the wedding date in order to guarantee that no scheduling conflicts occur.
Typically, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church does not allow marriages to be celebrated during the season of Lent (from Ash Wednesday through Easter Day), Sundays, holidays, or holiday weekends. Special circumstances can be discussed with the Rector.
For further guidelines regarding the church, the service, music, flowers, photography, and fees (both member and non-member), please see our Wedding Customary and Wedding Information Sheet [attach link for both].
Once you have had a chance to thoroughly review the Wedding Customary and understand all that is required, please contact the church’s Ministry Support Associate, Sara Spreen, at 210-828-6425, to begin the scheduling process.
The liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all meaning in the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too, shall be raised.
The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This joy, however, does not make human grief unchristian. The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend. So, while we rejoice that one we love has entered into the nearer presence of our Lord, we sorrow in sympathy with those who mourn.
The death of a member of the Church should be reported as soon as possible to, and arrangements for the funeral should be made in consultation with, the Minister of the Congregation. Please contact the Rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church or the Ministry Support Associate at 210-828-6425.
Grant, O Lord, to all who are bereaved the spirit of faith and courage, that they may have strength to meet the days to come with steadfastness and patience; not sorrowing as those without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your great goodness, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love. And this we ask in the Name of Jesus Crhist our Savior. Amen.
