Choral Evensong
Choral Evensong, Sunday, May 19 at 4:30 pm
Our final Evensong of the term falls on the Church’s Birthday – Pentecost – and we shall celebrate it appropriately. Both the Canticles and Anthem are new to our choir library. Sir John Stainer wrote this rarely performed Magnificat and Nunc dimittis that draws upon the traditional attributes of the Anglican tradition, with good, bold tunes and a clever use of meter. Then a modern, beautiful anthem by Elaine Hagenberg: “When we love.” She creates a warm and gentle harmonic background to Silvestri’s text: For when we love, Simply love, Even as we are loved, Our weary world can be transformed into the Kingdom of God. This is a simple truth. Or to quote John Lennon: All you need is love.
