Outreach

The Outreach Mission Committee

Our Mission Statement: St. Luke’s is committed to answering Christ’s call to serve our neighbors through various outreach endeavors throughout the year. Over the years the parish has been involved with various outreach efforts across our ministries, and we continue to look for new ways to engage with the San Antonio and larger DWTX community and answer the needs of those with whom we share this city.

St. Luke’s ongoing outreach endeavors throughout the year:

The Green Door Thrift Shop

“God calls us to share compassion and generosity with people in need. At St. Luke’s there are many ways for people to offer themselves in service to others.”

Purpose: The Green Door Thrift Shop sells donated items and uses the proceeds to support organizations dedicated to charitable and humanitarian efforts through an annual grant process. Organizations must have a mission and vision consistent with that of St. Luke’s and the Episcopal Church. Store sales fully support the operation of the store and an annual tithe to the church of 10% is
part of the grant process.

Requirements to get involved: We have tasks for everyone, including people with limited mobility. We also accept donations any time the store is open and by appointment. How often a person would serve, or what the time commitment is:

Volunteers are needed to operate the store Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Times commitment can vary from a couple of hours to the entire shift. Volunteers are also needed as substitutes, on some Mondays, and for extended hours until 3 pm the last Saturday of the month. We need occasional help from people with special knowledge about unique donations (art, stamps, books,
jewelry, etc.). Opportunities exist for members of St Luke’s to be on the Board of Directors, the Facility Committee, Christian Giving Committee, and the Operating Committee.

Recovery Groups

Several recovery groups meet at St. Luke’s Church, gathering regularly in the Undercroft. Among the groups currently meeting at the church are the following:

AA SURVIVORS GROUP / BIG BOOK STUDY (Tuesdays 8:00 pm)
AA SURVIVORS GROUP (Wednesdays, 8:00 pm)
AA GENERIC GROUP (Thursdays, 8:15 pm)
WOMEN’S AA GROUP (Saturdays, 10:00 am)

Recovery groups at St. Luke’s go back about 65 years. The Episcopal Church and St. Luke’s have always been a strong supporter of recovery programs from the very early days to the present, and there is a growing need to continue this ministry. The AA Generic Group is currently the oldest existing group to meet at St. Luke’s and celebrated their 30th anniversary in the Fall of 2024. They
typically hold 2 celebrations per year: a Fall Anniversary BBQ and a Spring Fling Celebration. They continue to meet every Thursday evening.

The newest group to start meetings at St. Luke’s is a spinoff from the Wednesday night Survivor’s Group. They started in late July 2024, with meetings on Tuesday evenings and focus on the AA Big Book Study. Each one of the above-listed groups is a safe and supportive community and will welcome anyone who may need guidance and encouragement.

All groups meet every week (52 weeks) during the year.
